Mens Junior Division 2
Gort Utd 4-5 Kinvara Utd
A thrilling match was held in Kiltullagh on Tuesday evening as Gort Utd hosted Kinvara Utd in Division 2 of the Mens GFA League.
Gort started strongest and found themselves 3-0 up thanks to some excellent ball play and pace out wide, however Kinvara rallied and continued to battle hard until they were rewarded with a goal from Rory Moran. 3-1.
The goal gave Kinvara some much needed belief and their efforts were again rewarded when young Padraig Pearl won a penalty which was converted by Johnny Linnane to make it 3-2.
Now we had a game on our hands, and Kinvara piled on the pressure before winning a corner late in the first half. It was well struck by Johnny and flew through the defence with a slight deflection and straight into the back of the net. 3-3! The match looked set to be all square at the break however Gort broke through on the brink half time to go 4-3 up which left Kinvara deflated but optimistic heading in for the half time team talk.
Second half resumed with that all important next goal crucial for both teams. Gort started strongly again but Kinvara were well up for it our defensive line of Colm Moran, Conor McGrath, Steven Faul and Eoghan Hanley held strong which allowed Kinvara in turn to start expressing themselves on the ball, and 25 minutes into the second half we were awarded with another penalty won by Keelan James which Johnny Linnane calmly converted to level the game and bag his hat-trick. 4-4!!
Both teams rallied in the hope of bagging a winner. Goalkeeper Sean Phillips kept Kinvara in it with some fine blocks and 1v1 challenges. Rory Moran was a trojan in midfield while Tom Brennan and Harry Mulleady were relentless closing down play in midfield. With 10 minutes remaining, Kinvara were awarded another corner which found Padraig Pearl at the back post, and his chip into the area was headed home by Rory Moran to make it 5-4 and seal the win for Kinvara.
An outstanding performance from a young Kinvara side who showed excellent heart, determination and resolve throughout and thoroughly deserved the win to make it 2 wins from 3 and leave our lads in 3rd place after 3 games played. Big thanks to our neighbours Gort Utd for an outstanding game of football.
